1302 GL

Here's some pics of my '71 Super that I've been working on. I cut the sunroof clip from my original rusted out body and welded it to a body I got from Larry. The chassis has been completely stripped down, pan replaced on passenger side, half pan replaced on driver side, surface rust removed and completely POR-15 coated. Image Image

Euro Trash... I bet you have Porsche rims for it as well. J/K I love the idea. And I am up the road and around the corner when the Volksrod is going, just a few steps away after tonight.

So I got back after this a year later. I started putting in the rear torsion springs and popped off the cap on one of the spring plates. What a PITA when you have to salvage another one and POR 15 it to match the rest. Doesn't help that I am out of por 15 and have to drive almost to Guthrie to get more. I'll try drinking less tomorrow and see if I can get more done on the front suspension while the por 15 dries.

I ended up popping the end off of the new one too. Something was keeping the torsion bar from going al the way in on the inside splines. So I welded the damn end back on and hammered it all back together. But of course one of the bolts broke when I was torquing the cover on. So much for some relaxing VWing on my off week.

3 1/2 years later. ... it took 2 days to clean off all the crap i had stored in and on the car. It is now rolled on its side to clean up the bottom of the body and Por-15 the underside. There is only a little rust to fix before I roll it back. I'm only planning on cleaning up the under side so i can finish the front suspension on the pan and remount the body back on. We'll see how that really goes. Pics tomorrow.

...or a month later.

Here's what I've been working the last few weeks

I put the body on a frame to roll it on its side. I found rust in both rear wheel wells that went through all three layers of body panels. Then I welded in a replacement package tray. I had a bad rust spot through the body under the strut support in the front so I cut off part of the strut support and patched underneath. Then I fixed the typical rust areas along the rocker panels. Next up was removal of the body support panel in the left rear to fix lots more rust in that area. Once I got all the rust remediation taken care of I applied 2 coats of POR-15 to the entire bottom of the car. As soon as I get the wheels stripped of paint and coated in POR-15 I can put the body on the chassis and it won't have to come off again. This way I can do all of the suspension work now and not worry about masking around it for paint. Pics are at this link:

Great work Luke...glad to see you are making progress. Where do you get the POR-15 locally?

I built the rack sort of. It Was left over truss from a set at school. I modified it into a second life that's Much more useful. The Por-15 can be acquired at Waterloo Napa.

That is why you do not look under the bug, or the bed as there are bad things under there, gremlins, boogey men and rust...................
