2011 Racer Dave Racing Report

Postby vwracerdave » Sun Mar 06, 2011 7:20 pm

Sunday 03-06-2011 - Thunder Valley Raceway Park

.......6, 7, 8, 9, 10. Ready or not here I come. Another great racing season is about to begin. I have slimmed down 25 lbs. and am ready to race. Nothing is broke from last year so all I need to do is change the oil, and tune them up. Got the Blue Dunebuggy with the 2007cc engine prepped for a Test 'n Tune at the track. Wanted to make a few passes and shake out the cob webs. Good weather and the Buggy was running awesome. Pulled a big wheelie every pass and now I have a few tiny scratches on the bottom of my exhaust from it touching the ground. Made 4 passes and was very happy with them. Best pass was 14.294 @ 88.46 MPH with the muffler and fan belt on. Next week I might get the Ghia ready. We start racing in 2 more weeks.

Oh I wish I were an Oscar Mayer wiener
That is what I truly want to be
Because if I were an Oscar Mayer wiener
Everyone would be in love with me.

Saturday 03-19-2011 - TVRP

Well here comes Johnnie, whoever the heck he is. Thunder Valley is racing 1/8th mile this year. It is a bunch of political BS because the Division 4 bracket finals in Ennis is 1/8th mile this year. Bought myself one of those fancy GoPro Hero video cameras. Took the Blue Dunebuggy to the 1st race of the year. Car ran great and wheelied hard every pass. Stupid driver was all excited and red light twice and was done. Lost to a Mustang and a Mercury Cyclone. Ran a 8.65, 8.63, 8.61, and 8.61. Four consistant passes should have won a few rounds. Coulda, shoulda, woulda, won't get you to the winners circle.

saturday 3-26-2011 TVRP

Just a horrible day at the track. Very cold and windy. I had trouble getting traction and spun the tires several passes. Rocker arm came loose during time trials and I had to fix it with "Made in Taiwan" tools. Too damn cold to even eat a hamburger. Spun the tires and lost 1st round. Bought back and red light 2nd round. Wish they would have just cancelled the races. Had more fun listening to the OKC Barons hockey game on the radio driving home then I did at the track. Didn't even win any money on my lottery tickets. I actually did make one good pass and ran a 8.71 @ 74.59 MPH. Can I buy a vowel somewhere in this mess?

If anybody is interested in following alone in real time this Saturday night, you can watch the scoreboards and timing clocks live on the Internet as it is happening in real time. Go to www.1320go.com and on the menu bar go to "watch track timing" then click on "tracks" select Thunder Valley Raceway Park and the track scoreboards will come on. There is no sound or video just the timing screen. It shows all the reaction times, ET's and MPH's of every car racing. I'm car number A439 and race in No-E Street class. You can click on other tracks and see what is happening anywhere. There are about 30 tracks around the country that are hooked up to this site. Jim maybe you can check it out while your flying around in out taxpayer plane. SandDude you can even watch your pappy race.

Saturday 4-2-2011 - Thunder Valley

Well not really setting the world on fire, but still trying. Stil racing the Blue Dunebuggy in the 1/8 th mile. Made really good time trials 8.70 & 8.71. The old geezers and jalopies from the 50's and 60's were there for the Nostalgia class. It's a good thing my Fiberglass car doesn't rust. Red a Red Mustang 1st round and won with a dead on dial. That means I ran exactly to the thousandths that I dialed in at. Got back in line for 2nd round and never got focused and lost with a bad reaction time. Not doing very well so far but at least I'm not in last place.

Sunday Sunday Sunday 4-10-2011 - Arkansas City, Kansas

Didn't get to race Saturday at TVRP. Post Office has some stupid federal Law that all mail must be delivered before quitting time. Had to stay late and get 'r done. Took the Roadster to Kansas to defend my Championship. Did pretty good and made it to the 4th round. They had 19 cars in my class so I would have needed to go two more rounds to win. Gosh darn wind was sweeping down the plains just like the Wizard of Oz movie. Car ran great and fast. Raced a Nova 1st round, a Chevy II 2nd round, Bye run 3rd round, and got beat by a new Mustang 4th round by .030 seconds. Running the full 1/4 mile and the best pass was a 12.940 @ 98.27 MPH. Got some more cool video of 3rd time trial and 1st round.

Sunday 4-17-2011 - Mid-America Dragway

Good golly Miss Molly, March winds are still blowing strong in April. Drove to Kansas to race the Roadster in Sportsman class. Two time trials and set to kill. Gosh darn head wind and I'm running a full 1/2 second slower then last week. Drew the bye 1st round, eliminated a farm kid in his pick-up 2nd round and raced an El Camino 3rd round and broke out giving him the win. Best pass 13.330 @ 93.94 MPH. Took a great video of me driving and the other lane. This will give you a good ideal of what bracket racing is all about. Notice the flags and how windy it is. Watch me do a burnout . The lever with the blue ball on top is a hand brake. Watch The tach and you'll see my arm shift. The El Camino is dialed in a 13.90 and I'm dialed 13.43. Watch the starting lights and you can see the handicap start. Now the wheelie and here we go. 1st stripe is the 1/8th mile so look for the 2nd stripe at the 1/4 mile finish line. I beat him across the stripe by .023 seconds, but broke out.

Saturday 5-21-2011 - Thunder Valley Raceway

Well dang, the world didn't end yesterday and I didn't win. Just plain had my head up my ass and threw a good race in the trash. Raced a purple Camaro in my Blue Dunebuggy. Drew a Blue Dodge Dart for 2nd round. He gives me a .049 second handicap spot. The dude cuts a horrible .319 R/T and starts chasing me down. I'm shifting and peddeling as fast as I can to stay out front. Near the end I see he's a car length behind. I hit the brakes 10' before the finish line and still break out I could have, should have won that round. I embarrassed myself at the track just like the Thunder team stunk up the court. Well at least the world didn't come to an end. I heard on TV that there have been lots of people predicting the end of the world, and none of them have been right yet.

I'm watching American Copper guy's scream and fight.

Saturday 5-28 - TVRP

Just when you think it's your turn to win the lottery the sky falls. Won 1st round in the Dunebuggy. Launch the car 2nd round and the front wheels started to leave the planet and clank. Broke a CV joint and game over. Towed it home on the tow bar clattering and clanking all the way. I've got spares and will have it fixed soon. SandDude and 'lil Dude were there watching.

Jim, I actually do have a spare axle with CV's in my truck. If it breaks in time trials I can change it before 1st round and race. It broke 2nd round and I lost and was done.

Sunday 6-5-2011 - Arkansas City, KS

Just got back from up North. Raced the Roadster with the big 1915cc engine. Had a great time and got to spend all day watching a farmer drive his tractor around in circles planting his field next to the track. Won 1st round against a Nova when he broke out. Tapped the braked at the end on 2nd round for an easy win against a Mustang. Waxed a Chevy Blazer on the tree 3rd round and coasted across the finish line to win. Great reaction time from 3rd round got me the bye run 4th round. Lost 5th round Semi final against a Black Camaro when my clutch started slipping. Guess I'll have to call CB tomorrow and order a new clutch and P/P. Even though I got money for the Semi's, it still cost more in gas to drive up & back then I won. Oh, well they always told me the best way to win in a million bucks racing is to start with 2 million and quit when it's 1/2 gone. Best pass against the wind 13.092 @ 97.59 MPH.

Friday 6-17 TVRP

Towed the Ghia with the 2165cc up to TVRP to test. Made 3 passes and still not going straight. Somethings wrong with the front end. Track security guard told me I lifted the front wheels a few inches off the ground. Lots of big V8's can't do that. Only ran a 14.92.

Saturday 6-18 TVRP

Hook up the Blue Dunebuggy with the 2007cc engine and got to the track to race in the Oklahoma State Championships. All 50 states get to have a once a year race with special NHRA trophies. Good gosh it was hot. Over 100* in the pits according to my fancy weather thingy. Made my time trials and wouldn't you know it on the 3rd one and clank, clunk I broke the same CV joint that I did a few weeks ago. I pulled out the spare and thrashed hard to change out the axle. Just got done in time for 1st round. Jim I told you I could get 'r done. Lined up 1st round against a black Camaro all nervous and scared that the axles would hold up. The dude red lights and I dump the clutch and start looking at the sky. Next round I race a Buick Regal. I spot him .032 on the tree. We're both wheel to wheel and he takes the strip by .002 and breaks out giving me the win. 3rd round against a purple Camaro and I miss 3rd gear shift and the dance is done. Best pass was a 8.857 @ 74.32 MPH.

Where's the fireworks gonna be this year?

Sunday 6-26-2011 - Mid America dragway

Rolling along in the Roadster. Got a new clutch and pressure plate in the race car and a tank full of race gas. That's 110 octane and purple, not that clear crap you get at the 7-11. Loaded up the cooler with 700 soda's and hamburger meat to cook lunch and forgot the buns. 97 degree's at high noon and we're lining up to race. 1st round I get a Duster that is slower then molasses. I have to spot him 5.37 seconds on the tree. Off he goes, I wait and then it's my turn. I wheelie, I peddle, I shift, I'm catching him, but he gets there 1st and breaks out. Next round I'm stuck with a farmer wearing overalls. He must have taken a nap because I'm ahead and coast the last 100' and win. 3rd round it's a Buick and get him across the line. 4th round semi-finals and I race a big Ford pick-up truck. He gets me on the tree and gets me across the finish line. That sucker beat me on both ends of the track. Best pass 13.367 @ 95.13 MPH.

Looking for a complete hub to hub 67-68 type III transaxle. Must be rebuildable.

Saturday 7-9-2011 - Mid America Dragway - Arkansas City, Kansas

You'd thunk that a mailman walking outside all day would get used to this 100* heat. Truth is that it's still no fun. You never get used to it, you just learn how to live with it. Took the Roadster with the 160 HP 1915cc to race. 107* at 7:00 pm on the big concrete airstrip for 1st round of time trials. boy oh boy did I really blow it today. 1st round as the sun was setting I misjudged how much faster the air cooled engine would run and broke out .03 against a Blue Buick. Bought back in for 2nd round and the sun is gone. Dialed .02 quicker then I ran last round thinking I'd be safe. Hammered hard and broke out by a full 1/10th of a second racing a yellow Trans-Am. That's the disadvantage of racing a VW. Air temp has a huge effect on how fast they run. That's just part of the game. Needed relief from disappointment so I just had to stop at Braum's on the way back for a hot fudge sunday. The one with the brownie and nuts and whipped cream and a cherry on top.

Hot enough to fry an egg on the sidewalk.

Saturday 7-30-2011 - Thunder Valley Raceway Park

Summer hours and late night racing to avoid the heat. (yea right). Made my first time trial at 8:10 and 97* on the weather doodad thingamajig. Some jerk oiled down the track and we lined up for 1st round at 10:46 and it's still hot. Don't forget I have to wear a one layer fire retardant jacket, gloves, and helmet. I'm the odd man out and drew the bye run, so instant win. Ran a 8.95 on a 8.95 dial with an 038 reaction time. 2nd round raced a Mustang and waxed a great 013 R/T and won by .022. 3rd round against a Blue Malibu and ran a 9.002 on a 9.00 dial but he had a better 020 R/T and got me across the line by .037. Just getting too old to keep up with these young kids.

Saturday 8-6-2011 TVRP

Gather round the campfire boys and girls. Get some marshmallows and chocolate bars, this might take a while. Raced the Blue street Dunebuggy with the 2007cc and Centerline wheels. 1st round raced a tall skinny kid in a Red Camaro and red light. Bought back in for 2nd round and had to race the guy in 1st place in points in his Brown Camaro. I put a whooping on him with an .018 R/T and took the win. Got the bye run 3rd round. Had to race a White El Camino 4th round and squeaked by him. 2 cars left, me and a Mustang that has Uncles and Cousins that also race. Focused on the starting tree and smashed the gas when the last yellow bulb came on. Wheels up and grabbing the gears. We're side by side and I'm 1/2 car length ahead. I throw out the anchor 10' before the finish and take the win.Whoooo Hoooo I won. I'm the hero.

Don't burn the marshmallows

Saturday 8-13-2011 - TVRP Noble, OK

Not too bad today. Made it 4 rounds to the semi finals in the Blue street legal Dunebuggy exactly the way I drove it to the meeting Tuesday, but with the wheelie bars attached. Raced a Mustang 1st, Mustang 2nd round, Trans Am, 3rd round. Spun the tires a tiny bit off the line and couldn't run the number against a Camaro 4th round.

1st time trial - .061 R/T - 8.950 @ 73.65 MPH
2nd time trial - .113 R/T - 8.977 @ 73.02 MPH
1st round - 8.99 dial - .103 R/T - 9.074 @ 71.10 MPH - MOV = .121
2nd round - 9.01 dial - .051 R/T - 9.008 @ 73.27 MPH - MOV = .019 on a double breakout
3rd round - 9.01 dial - .052 R/T - 8.938 @ 73.38 MPH - MOV = .064 on a double breakout
4th round - 8.97 dial - .024 R/T - 9.030 @ 73.02 MPH - MOV = lost by .025

Saturday 8-20-2011 - Noble, Ok

I'm on a roll and kickin asss. Racing the Blue Dunebuggy with the 2007cc and life is great. Made the 2 time trials and ready to rock. Raced a Mustang 1st round and won by a full car length. Raced the Brown Camaro that's tied for 1st in points and barley slid by with a .002 seconds victory. Next I raced the other White Camaro tied for 1st in points and hammered him on the tree with an awesome R/T for the win. Final round raced a Ford Comet and got the win when he red light. Checkered flag and the big check and I'm in the winners circle.

Now the stage gets bigger and the bright lights shine. Tonight is the race for the "king Of The Valley" The winner of each class race for the crown. Ist round aT 12:45 a.m. and I get to run the Super Pro winner in his dragster. I ain't skeered and clinch my fist and grit my teeth. I dial in a 8.90 against his 5.16. The light turns green and I wheelie and see the stars. I'm shifting and rowing the VW and holding my breath and not looking back. I whoop his ass and win on a holeshot, and the crowd goes nuts. Really they told me so. Final round I'm against the NO-E winner for the crown in his show car perfect Firebird. I'm tanned and ready. I cut a .014 R/T against his .016. My little Dunebuggy just doesn't quite have enough and he skates around me at the finish line for the win. Congratulations Alvie Merril for winning "King Of The Valley"

Now if I can buy a vowel, I'll be President.

Damn my head is big

Sunday, Sunday, Sunday 9-25-2011 Thunder Valley

Loaded up the real race car with the 1915cc and headed to the Valley. Cool and crisp 74* at high noon. Guess everybody was in a hurry and just scared of the Vdub. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd round my opponent red light against me. Got the bye run 4th round into the final. Raced that White Camaro and cut a bad red light and went home with a runner-up finish and a check. Not bad for not beating anybody. Just show up and go home with 2nd place. Car ran great . Best pass 7.98 @ 83.84 MPH.

Where's the beef?

Looks like I'm done for the year. Sunday I took the Ghia to the track to see if it runs straight. I finally got new German ball joints installed and it all works good. With the wind sweeping down the plains I ran a 14.60 @ 91 MPH. Not bad for a car that weights 1950 Lbs without my fat ass inside (another 200 lbs).

Summing up the year I really didn't do too bad. Entered 23 races and made 4 finals with 2 wins and 2 runner-ups. Also made 3 semi-finals. I made 130 passes and raced at 2 tracks. I finished 4th in points at TVRP and 3rd at MAD. Fastest pass of the year was a 12.577 @ 103.40 MPH.

Well the city got after me about parking my trailer in the grass at the side of my house. Seems there is a rule agaist it. Screw em, I just spent a whole lot of money and had my driveway widened to park it on.

i could have made the city happy with $100 worth of gravel, but someday when I retire i'd kinda like to maybe get a motor home. If not I now have enough driveway to put up a basketball goal.
