55 Oval Rag Top Build (previous board posted by 69GHIA)

Postby mandoclimber » Fri Sep 04, 2009 6:57 pm

Well my dad's had this '55 oval for more than 22+ years sitting in the same spot under the same pine tree in his back yard (It was last tagged in 1987). So any way i've been wondering what to do with it for awhile. Restore it? Build a nice Baja? Then it came to me; VOLKSROD it is... Now before I get hate mail it was cut up into a baja long ago so im not cutting up a pure oval here. Im realy impresed with the shape that it's in. All heater channels are there and in realy solid shap as is the rest of the car. No bad rot any where so far.
My plan on this so far is to keep it a budget build as much as possible for the most part. But my plans so far is to put it on a late model pan, extend the front end, and install a 2387cc power plant for the excitement factor. Other than that I'll figure it out as I go...

I'll post a picture of the car when I dig it out from under the tree and I'll continue to post pictures as I go...

jk as long as its not a type3Maybe I will do a type lll next. Oh wait we've already done that with a chopped top
welded/fininshed seems in the late 80's. It was a nice roadster look but we never
finished it. it just needed paint. i think it was sold to a triker who took the auto trans
out and scraped the car. Bummer...

heh, our chat give you some ideas? Lots of idea's as per our chat Jim. Sunday was a very productive day
as I already have the body seperated from the pan so now the real
work begins...
This car needs ALOT of TLC as most do but someone got alittle to
happy with the sawzaw when they cut the car up into a baja. For some
reason they cut the louvers off under the rear oval window section.
Know any one that will have one? I sure would like to graft one back
in. I have pictures just havn't uploaded them yet.

Finaly I have pictures for all to see . Their is the good (straight body & solid '55 gas tank),
and the bad (where body bolts to pan needs replaced and louvers under oval window were
cut out) But i've seen worse; It will make a great RAT ROD.

you cant cut up one oval to fix another!!!

Richard, it only looks like the rear half of the vents are bad. i know it would be work, but use late models to fill in the bottom missing parts. Or spend 200-350 for a rear window clip

That is one of three in that row of cars. They are all solid cars with minamal rust
and NO I will not cut one up just for the rear window section...
That's why I would like to find one that is a parts car, too bad to restore as this one is...

Jim:
Don't worry I refuse to cut up a nice solid oval.
I do however have a '64 bug that has been hit in the front
so maybe that will work. Hope so any way

Alright then that leaves me with two question; 1. If you have all these solid body ovals why put all that money and energy into the bad cut Baja and just use it for parts and build your rat from one of the solid bodied subjects? Just because you want to rat something doesn't mean you have to destroy a good body, you can build it in a fashion that you can always do a restore later! 2. If thats not possible then I've seen fiberglass oval back window and vent reproductions could you go with one of those?

Just my thoughts and ramblings!

Cause he wants a rat rod styled like this.....

SO you have to baja it. No way anyone in their right mind will do that to an oval.

Ya I know I have lots of options here. I did find a rear oval clip for $600 on samba today. It's from the door post back but I would need to drive to LA to pick it up. Theres also a rear split clip for the same price in New York. I also found just the oval section for $200 and then I could cut the rest that I need from a 62 body that I have that has been wrecked hard in the front. To many options so little time Da%m I love V-dubs....

No matter what you decide...good luck with it. I cant wait to see it rolling down the road in the future. Kudos for the save!!!!!

knob (it will be cool what ever it is)...

Hey Jim; know any one in your hot rod club that has a 28 - 34 Ford front axle assembly complete

I would like to chop the top but I don't know if I will as of yet. I may build the car and then do it at a later
date. I've not chopped a top before. The volksrod would look good chopped so who knows. My main
concern right now is that rear louver section. They chopped all the deck lid supports and the under tray for the
louvers so i'm going to fix that first then maybe.

Well I worked on the car a little tonight. I'm starting to re-think the '55 oval route. It's going to take a lot more work than at first thought.
may go with the '59 I have in stead. It to has been chopped in the back but at least it has all of the louvers and is a decent car for
the build. It's just to the point were I would need to cut up a car to fix a car. NOT COOL!!!

Any one want to buy the '55? I'll throw in the '55 pan
