Circle the Wagens

Postby vwlimoguy » Tue Feb 07, 2012 10:11 pm

Anyone remember the guys that came through town about 5 years ago shooting a documentary in their blue bus? They are finally in the final stages of post production and are raising money to finish the project. More info can be found here if youare interested in helping out. http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/charliepecoraro/circle-the-wagen

Who's ridiculous now! :P
Of course you'd have to be crazy to pay 10k for that bus, but they needed the cash. I'll be getting a rust chip of it in the mail soon.

The documentary is finally complete and will make it's world premiere on June 9th in Albuquerque, NM. The official trailer is out, features me later and less, but the Limo still made the cut. Anyone up for a road trip?

Mike made the road trip with me. Turned out to be a pretty good movie about their journey and the people they met on the way. Here's a little photo journal of the trip:

Mike was the navigator for the sections of Old Route 66 we traveled. Our first stop was at Lucille's Road House in Weatherford, OK.
Image

A short jaunt down Old 66 to Clinton, OK brought us to the Rte 66 Museum. Only stopped there for some quick pics.
Image

Crossing into Texas took us through the town of Shamrock where this cool old Conoco station sits. It was here that I discovered I left my gas cap on the pump at the 7-Eleven by Mike's house. Damn fools that always want to ask about my car made me forget I had put it there while cleaning the windshield.
Image

Just before coming into Amarillo we passed the Bug Ranch. The cars were void of gas caps, despite one of them being an early '71 (with a functioning gas door) that still has a '70 (one year only gas cap style) filler neck but no cap.
Image

We stopped in Tucumcari, NM at the Blue Swallow for the evening. Coming into town we drove through a dust storm that had zero visibility for a minute or two, then a light sprinkling of rain to make mud on the windshield. It finally rained enough to wash off the dirt by the time we rolled into the Blue Swallow (which is where the Croc sat for 4 years waiting to finish it's journey).

The next day we started the climb up the mountains into Albuquerque. The limo started running hot and getting a little bit of altitude sickness. So we stopped at every souvenir place to cool off the motor a bit.
Image

This is what every car that passed us looked like.
Image

We stopped in Santa Rosa to put a drain hose on the dipstick tube so all the oil blowing out would not end up in the engine compartment. It wasn't that much oil, but with the high temps I didn't want to start a fire.

We rolled into ABQ and stayed at the Hiway House Motel, official housing host of the Circle the Wagen party. The Croc, the featured Bus in the film, was parked outside.
Image

After an evening of drinking and a trip out to the KOA where all the other VW Bus drivers were camped we crashed hard. I would not recommend the Hiway house based on comfort or amenities.

The next morning we lined Central Ave (Old Route 66) with busses and the Limo in front of the Guild Cinema where the film would premiere later that evening.
Image

The rest of the day was spent at a pull and pay junk yard finding an external oil cooler to put in the limo. Pulled a nice one off of a Ford explorer. After the premiere we all enjoyed some Limo Drippings and VW tales by the Croc.

The next day was Monday and we needed to drive back in one day. An early trip to the local VW repair shop yielded some loaner tools and the modifications were made to mount the external oil cooler. With the engine running cooler we headed East on I-44 and drove the Limo too hard. This is how the day ended.
Image

As serene as this may look, it is at an exit to Weatherfod, OK, 75 miles from home. Mike and I finished the last 2 Limo Drippings while we waited for the tow truck. In retrospect, here's what I think happened. While installing the oil cooler, I pulled the distributor to gain easier access to the oil lines. When I put the distributor back I found the drive gear had popped up and I lost timing. I got the shims out of the case and everything reinstalled. While timing the engine I'm sure I advanced it too far to compensate for the altitude sickness. When we pulled off the highway, the engine was blowing exhaust gas out of the crankcase so I'm sure that I burned a piston out. I'll be tearing the engine down later this week to find out what happened. Hopefully it is just pistons and cylinders that need replaced and I won't have to tear down the short block. Wish me luck.
