FYI Thing wiper motor repair (saved $275.00)

FYI...really did not repair....just took apart and cleaned/dressed the armature/brush contacts,
cleaned and lubed all moving parts.....
The 40 year old grease in the metal and nylon gears...very tacky and
still appeared good....for its age...
This wiper appeared to have never been apart....or serviced...had
orig. green paint on all of the screws

the failure or stoppage....was in the
armature shaft/bushing area that runs the gears....the only part that really spins half-way fast...
thus the friction and the added years....and the closest tolerance that need
really to stay lubed...dries out with age.....slows down the motor and finally it stops.
It was binding in that area....not froze up....but just dry resistance... hard to spin the
armature....never did blow the fuse...just stopped.

The hardest part of this refurbishment was re-installing the brush plate w/the 3 brushes
back into their guides w/springs and inserting the armature

On my way home from the Rt. 66 Bug Bash this year....it rained.....never had used the
wipers before....worked for about 10 minutes....then did the "death shutter dance" and stopped.

Something to repair on a cold day(in the garage)

The wiper pivots are another weakness in the wiper design of the air cooled vw's
they also wear and bind in the shaft/bushing area...thus stopping your wipers.

The "Thing Shop" gets $275.00 for their rebuilds.....just saved $$$$

Actually not that difficult of a repair....if yours craps out...we can fix

The Thing Shop also wants a $180.00 core charge....
and as I checked....they are out of stock on their $275.00 rebuilds...
That is a lot of change when you add the 180 + 275 + handling + shipping back
and forth....although you get your $180 back....
