Gearbox Problems

Postby Bugophile » Tue Oct 20, 2009 9:18 am

My brother bought a 62 beetle and this week end I changed the gearbox oil for him. He said he was hearing a whine in the gears while driving. As I changed the oil I noticed some 1/4 to 1/2 inch chunks of metal in the oil catch pan. This can't be good sign. Car still shifts but metal is from unknown breakage. Anyone know a good rebuilder at a reasonable price I can send my brother to? Bryan

Bethany Imports has a few stock rebuilds on the shelf. They are exchange and rebuilt by the guy in Ponca City. He rebuilt my 2 race trannies and so far no problems.

Your only other choice in Ok. is Bill Shanks up in Tulsa.

If the trans has no problems, why take it apart?

Just put in fresh lube (I'd go with 80w140) and drive it till it breaks!
