Hello from Meeker

Postby NorskeMann82 » Wed Feb 22, 2012 5:48 pm

Hello. I'd like to start out by introducing myself, my name is Randall. I purchased a pretty little 1972 Super Beetle from a guy in Moore. I think I may have paid more than I should have, but I'm still happy with my "new" car. When I bought her she ran great...for a few days. I was on my way home from work and the engine started surging and sputtering. When I had a decent weekend to be able to work on it I found that the entire ignition system had to be replaced. When all that was done the car ran fine but would stall when it warmed up. I started looking to the carburetor to find out why. I found that the choke was set to be permanently closed, which would cover up the ignition system problem until the plugs fouled. I set the choke and still had an issue with poor idling, so I sprayed the hell out of the carb with carb and choke cleaner and let it sit for a few minutes. Now she runs like a champ. I have a few wiring issues that I'm working on, but one by one the gremlins are being exterminated. Only one left (that I know of) to get rid of and that's the one that's making my right turn signal not work when the headlights are on.

It took some doing, but I got my wife to let me buy it. This car is really starting to eat up my time...I love it. Now I have something to do on weekends. It looks like I get to rebuild a carburetor this weekend. I've done everything else to get my baby running right, but no luck. Carburetors scare me, to me it's like performing open heart surgery. Any advise?

What carb is on it? Take you time and don't forget where everything goes! I have had a lot of experience here lately on carbs. If you can't figure it out let me know id be glad to try and give you a second opinion. There aint nowhere i haven't been on a bug.

There are only like 5 parts in a 34pic 3, that is probably what you have.

If things were that rigged to make it run to sell i doubt a rebuild will help.

Start the car up, and while it is runinng spray the bottom of the carb where it meets the intake with carb cleaner, and all around where the gold throttle shaft goes through. If idle changes, that gasket is bad or throttle shaft is wore out and youll need another carb.

Yeah, it's the 34 PICT-3. The bushings are shot. I'm going to order a cheapo Chinese carb for now until I'm able to save the money for a good carb. I also found that the steering system is shot. While I was on my way home the car started vibrating wildly around the corners. When I got home I found that the tie rod ends on the center rod were worn out and could pop out at any moment. I found all the parts needed at cip1.com but they're of cheapo quality too. For the moment they'll have to do, I need to get my baby back on the road. While my Bug is down I'm stuck driving a Caprice that only gets 12 miles per gallon. If the cheap parts only last a month they would have already paid for themselves. My average commute divided by the fuel inefficiency of the Caprice times the cost of a gallon of fuel comes out to just over $200 more a month than driving the Bug. If they last 6 months I'll be up $1000 ($1200 minus the $200 for the cheap parts and the alignment) and can use that money to buy the higher quality parts.

it is problbalby one of the hundreds of bushings, spacers, etc on the front of the super.
SO after you put your parts in and if it still shakes take it and have the front wheels balanced ON the car.

I ordered my parts from www2.cip1.com. It's weird, the company name is California Import Parts Ltd, but they're based in Langley, British Columbia, Canada. I'm sure a lot of the parts are Chinese made, but they'll work for what I need them for.

The package tracking shows that they shipped out from Canada and got caught in customs. Maybe I'm misreading it though. Either way, I can't wait until my parts are here. I want by baby back on the road.

Me too. It just occurred to me that I sounded a bit like a jerk on my last post and I humbly apologize. That sure wasn't the mood I was wanting to convey.

When I first went to that site, it gave me an option to choose from... If I was an International and USA customer or a Canadian customer.. I wonder if that played a part in it. Maybe, when you searched for the part and clicked on the link, it linked you to the site for the Canadians. Just a thought...

I went to the one for American and international customers. Maybe the parts I ordered had something to do with it. I have 2 packages coming and only 1 is coming from Canada. I didn't think to look at the other one. That one is coming from Washington. So it may be the carburetor coming from Canada. Who knows?

My parts came in today! I haven't had a chance to look them over because they came after I left for work, but they're waiting for me at the house. Too bad the weather decided to pull a fast one and get cold and rainy on me, but that won't deter me from getting my baby back on the road.

Finally home and got to look over all my parts. They all came from Blaine, WA. It turns out that i DID read it wrong, sorry I was argumentive.

It's a possibility. I have a couple of control arm bushings to put in while I'm at it.

I was only able to sleep for 4 hours last night. I was too excited to be able to work on my car. The weather did me a solid and stayed warm this morning. I got my carburetor installed and now she starts up and stays running with almost zero effort. Now all I have to to is replace the tie rod ends, central tie rod, and some bushings. Oh how I wish I had a lift.

Check your plugs after you drive a bit, those carbs sometimes have a small main jet.

I forgot to put all that in, I was at work and it got hectic. I adjusted it myself well enough to drive it to the shop to have the alignment done. The shake is completely gone. There is a slight toe out on the rear wheels, but it's not bad enough to require repair yet. The front has a slight camber issue, but again it's not enough to require immediate repair. I noticed that my reverse lights and right rear turn signal are on whenever my right tail light is on, in the morning I'm going to try to see what's causing that. I'm sure it's just worn wires behind the tar board. Will update when I find out.
