Just found site

Postby dart330 » Mon Jan 20, 2014 10:07 pm

I moved to OKC almost 4 years ago for work and didn't find much of a VW scene, just the tuner crowd over on wetdub. I picked up a 1990 Vanagon as a project car this weekend and was searching around for Oklahoma bus groups and found this site.

A little about my VW history, I have mostly had busses: '59 Westy, '60 Westy, '74 7-Pass, '82 Westy, '85 Westy, '87 Syncro and now the '90 Carat. If I had to pick a favorite it would have to be the Syncro, wish I had never sold it. You can checkout an off-road video of it:

I have also had a '71 Super Beetle, '86 Cabriolet, '87 Jetta, '92 Corrado SLC and currently a '13 TDI Sportwagen.

Hoping to be able to join in the community here. I am always up for campouts and other VW get togethers. Also looking for mechanic recommendations, best I can tell Darrel is great, just haven't gotten ahold of him yet.

Here is the new one

I live right up the street from Eddie's and used him for a couple years. Then had a bad experience, decided to give him another chance and had an even worse experience, so looking to try someone new. I will do some research on Larry's.

I need to get the head gaskets done and am not in any hurry, so hoping to get on a waiting list with Darrel. In the meantime I am doing shocks and tires, and fixing up all the little stuff that has broken over the years. I will pretty much do anything but engine and transmission work myself. I just don't have the garage for it.

I will keep an eye out for info on any meet-ups here, would be great to you meet you guys.

The key to Darrell is get him to let you take it there. Then he will work on it when time permits.

I talked to Larry, he said he hadn't done one in a while, and would expect around $600 a head in labor. Told me to bring my own parts as he doesn't stock new heads and they are probably pitted and not reusable. I will probably go this route if Darrel is too busy to do any work for me.

Thanks for the invite, but unfortunately I will be out of town Feb. 1-2 & 15-16. Planning to be in town every weekend in March.

Good news I heard back from Darrel, says he can get me in towards the end of March. I think I am going to wait and let him do it based on all the great feedback. I don't have a road trip planned until mid-May anyways.

I've got another one for you guys. I went to title it and the previous owner had put 2004 and then overwrote with 2014. Tag agency wouldn't take it and the tax commission told me I was SOL unless I wanted to take the guy to court. I am going to try a couple other tag agencies to see if I can slip it by them. If not does anyone know a friendly tag agent that would be willing to help out?

go to another tag agent.
Or youll line out that section with "Incomplete deal" written on it, and use the next box. Okie big title? then the one on the back.

I'm going to try some other agents. It is an Illinois title from 1998 all the only other boxes say "dealer only".

Didn't have any luck with that method at the tag agency, they were not very helpful. I obtained a notarized lien release letter and had the PO mail that in with an application for a duplicate corrected title from Illinois. Hopefully I will have something useable in 4-6 weeks.

In the meantime I have already begun work on it. I can start a build thread if you guys are interested in seeing the progress.

Just wanted to follow up on the title issues. I ended up having to get a notarized lien release from a company that had purchased the original lien holder company. I sent this along with an application for a corrected title to Illinois and 7 weeks later we had the new title. Took it down to the tag agency and had no trouble with the new one. Sucks it took so long, but I am very glad it is finally legal.
