Recommendations on where to start on engine rebuild

Postby Ghias@Okiehollow » Fri Jul 13, 2012 3:42 pm

We are new to the El Reno/OKC area. We have had many VWs over the years and love the cars. We have owned a 1971 Ghia convertible for several years and are ready to start the rebuild. It has a 1600cc motor that I think we need to go back stock. Where is the best place to go for a rebuild kit or parts? Local or internet? I'm sure we will have LOTS of future questions! Also it would be great to find out about any local classic car clubs, meetings, cruises or just plain get togethers. We have a 1965 Mustang Convertible too. Thanks for the help! :D :D

Welcome!
Get German everything if you can especially engine parts. Chinese is junk. Locally there is Larry's vw on 23rd (parts and service), Bethany imports downtownand Kerr for parts. A 1600cc is stock for a 71 I believe. Look under the events section and club info for some get togethers.

first thing is take yours apart, see whats re-useable. Like he said, if yours is original and good, re-use it.

Then check or get the case linebored and case savers.

Then you can move on to the rest. Good pics in the post stickied at the top.
