Reg bug / super bug

Postby robwalk45 » Thu Dec 27, 2012 11:33 am

I am still looking for a beetle to buy. It seems like a lot of bug lovers prefer std. beetles over super beetles. Are there problems with super bugs?

I wouldn't call them problems. They have a macPherson fornt suspension instead of torsion springs in a front axle beam like a standard bug. The problem is when all the bushings in the sway bar and control arms wear out. A shimmy develops between 35 and 45 mph that some say can never be fixed. But if you replace all the bushings, have balanced tires and a good steering box there is no problem. Actually handles better than a regular bug on the corners.

The '71 and '72 Supers still have the flat windshield, '73 and later have the wraparound windshield.

What he said, and that too change all those bushings = $$ and time, where a regular beetle, 90% of the time, shocks and call it a day.

Plus the front of the std looks better to me.

Thanks for the info, I think I want a 69 or newer for the IRS. I am shopping on craigs list and thesamba. It seems like most of the cars that I am interested in are in far-way places. I guess a local bug will show up.

It cost about $50 for the bushings and 4 hours to replace them all a couple of weeks ago. Helped that I have a press for the control arm bushings.

I love my Super. She may be a fat chick, but I can put more junk in the trunk than you can in a standard Beetle.

Below are good links dealing with lowering either standard or super. The information is a good read as to what you want to decide on down the road as far a wheel, tire, most of the nuances with both suspensions etc. By the way, never had a standard but love my super.
