Well I finally found and purchased a 1966 Beetle. It is in pretty good condition, love to drive it!!!!!!!!!!!!
It has a 1600 DP, and has been converted to 12v. other than that it is pretty much stock. Just got finished pulling the engine and replacing the after market tin with VW tin and rounding up and installing the thermostat and flaps along with new engine compartment seals. It is really running good in this cooler weather.

"the thermostat and flaps" with the thermostat bracket, thermostat rod,
traverse rod(with clips) and tension spring

Think they are some what hard to find today, for so many
were removed and thrown away through out the years...
and I have never seen aftermarket ?
I am sure VW never intended for them to be discarded in the
first place as they were part of the engine temperature maintenance

They are a little hard to come by and a little more worn than you might like! I was surprised to find that worn and all they fit pretty good and work.

One can check the thermostat and or a used thermostat:
At a temperature of 149-158 degrees F in water, the
length of the unit should be at least 1.8 inches or 46 mm.
this measurement is not the total length, but the base of
the T to the top of the T, excluding the bottom Bolt hole flange
and the top rod hole flange
A diagram can be found in most VW repair manuals
with instructions how to install and adjust
I would sure check what I have, before spending big $$$ on the Samba
