Oh depends on if the alt you have comes with a internal regulator or not. What's the p#?

Are you swapping it in or was it previously there? The part number would really help.

If your alt. has one threaded spade terminal and one push on terminal then it is internaly regulated and you DO NOT use the voltage regulator. If the alt has one threaded spade terminal and a 3 prong plug terminal then you must use the corresponding voltage regulator.
As featured in DEC 2001 Hot VWs page 63

Page 32 of my owners manual states: " An occasional flickering of the warning light at idle speed after a spell of fast driving is quite harmless if the light goes out when accelerator is depressed."

make sure the grounds are good on the trans. and the connection on the bat to pan is good.
then check the alternator hot wire to wherever it goes, if you had a reg under the seat then you joined those 2 wires together?
